| Overview Description
This course of study prepares students for a variety of professional
employment opportunities in the field of Operations Management. Operations managers are
responsible for the transformation of a firm's resources into goods and services which
satisfy customers' requirements. A firm's resources include the people it employs, the
materials it purchases, and the capital and facilities required to support its operations.
Customers have a variety of requirements including high quality, competitive prices, and
on-time deliveries. Students in the Operations Management concentration will work to
develop the skills required to manage a firm's operations such that these and other
customer priorities are satisfied.

Course Descriptions
OPER 340 Operations Management
Management of the labor, materials, and capital resources of an
organization to produce higher valued goods and services. Utilizes systems concepts and
analytical methods to evaluate use of resources and covers forecasting, planning,
scheduling, inventory, and quality control activities. Prerequisite: BUSN 230 and third
year standing. Fall and Spring.
OPER 343 Computer Modeling of Operations
This course covers the fundamentals of model building in Operations
Management including random events and validation. Spreadsheets, databases, programming
languages, and other modeling tools are utilized to develop business applications.
Prerequisite: OPER 340. Fall.
OPER 348 Quality Management
This course is a study of TQM (total quality management) topics
including: TQM philosophy, diagnostic techniques, sampling, and statistical process
control. Prerequisites: OPER 340 and third year standing. Fall.
OPER 440 Advanced Operations and Supply System
Management
This course relies on the concepts and skills learned in other
operations courses in the concentration to examine current problems and issues in the
operations functions. In order to keep the content of the course timely and relevant to
current issues in the global business areas, topics will vary from semester to semester.
Prerequisites: OPER 340. Spring.
OPER 445 Project Management
A study of managerial concepts and technical tools for planning,
scheduling, budgeting, controlling, and evaluating projects. An emphasis is placed on the
use of project management software such as Project 98 as a scheduling and database tool.
Simulation software will be introduced to perform advanced sensitivity and scenario
analysis. Prerequisite: OPER 340. Spring.
OPER 489 Special Topic Seminar
Credits by arrangement. Prerequisite: OPER 340. Fall, Spring or
Summer.
OPER 491 Directed Study
An individually designed course of study appropriate to the student's
concentration. Prerequisite: third or fourth year standing and Dean's permission. Summer.
OPER 497 Internship
Work experience directly related to the student's area of concentration.
Guidelines are available from the Internship Director. Pass/Fail only. Prerequisites:
third or fourth year standing; minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0. Fall, Spring, Summer.
