Overview

Description

Modern business enterprises, government agencies, and other institutions require people who have knowledge of monetary structures and the problems of financial control of enterprises. The demand for qualified graduates in the fields of commercial banking, securities management, mortgage banking, and finance is increasing.

Concentration Requirements

The finance concentration requires completion of 12 credits in the following areas:

* An elective can be chosen from either BFIN 323, 325, 327, 424, 426, 429, or 489.

Course Descriptions

BFIN 225 Personal Finance

Several areas of financial involvement to which most persons will be exposed in the normal lifetime; problems involved in buying life insurance, a home, a car, stocks, bonds, etc.; problems of borrowing for long and short terms; types of loans and "best" uses of credit. For non-business majors. Prerequisite: second year standing. On sufficient demand.

BFIN 320 Principles of Finance

Financial analysis and management, including time value of money, risk and return models, valuation, the cost of capital, capital budgeting techniques, and capital structure theory. Prerequisite: ACCT 261 and third year standing. Fall and Spring.

BFIN 322 Intermediate Finance

An extension of BFIN 320; new topics include working capital policy and management, advanced capital budgeting techniques, options, and futures. Prerequisite: BFIN 320. Spring.

BFIN 323 Entrepreneurship - The Start Up

Analysis of new ventures, legal factors, organizational matters, business plan development, franchising, sources of financing, organizational and profit effectiveness measures. Prerequisite: BFIN 320. Fall.

BFIN 325 Financial Institutions

Allocation of financial flows through the markets. Topics covered include the various financial institutions, fund flows, structure of markets, financial organization. Prerequisite: BFIN 320. On sufficient demand.

BFIN 327 International Finance and Accounting

A study of the accounting and financing considerations inherent in international business operations. Topics covered include foreign currency exchange and translation, hedging strategies, international financial markets, and accounting and auditing practices. Attention will be given to the ways in which legal, political, and policy differences affect trade and economic integration. Prerequisite: BFIN 320. Spring

BFIN 422 Investment Analysis

Basic principles and fundamentals of securities markets. Introduction to alternative investment choices and economic factors influencing these choices. Prerequisite: BFIN 320. Fall.

BFIN 423 Financial Management Cases

Case problems in corporate financial management. Topics include working capital, raising long-term capital, capital budgeting, cost of capital, and asset structure. Prerequisite: BFIN 322. Fall.

BFIN 424 Real Estate Principles

A study in the principles and practices of real estate marketing and financing. Prerequisite: third or fourth year standing. Fall.

BFIN 426 Mergers and Acquisitions

Merger types and characteristics, theoretical motivations for mergers, and principles of valuation are covered within the corporate finance framework. Prerequisite: BFIN 320. Spring.

BFIN 429 Portfolio Management

This is an arranged course that runs for the three consecutive semester beginning in the Spring semester of the student's junior year. The class will initially consists of lectures on financial theory and portfolio management from the finance faculty and local investment analysts, followed in the senior year with the actual management of an equity portfolio. Prerequisite: BFIN 422, 2.75 minimum g.p.a. for admission, and permission of the instructor. Spring.

BFIN 489 Special Topic Seminar

Credit by arrangement. Prerequisite: BFIN 320. On sufficient demand.

BFIN 491 Directed Study

An individually designed course appropriate to the student's concentration. Prerequisite: third or fourth year standing and Dean's permission. Summer.

BFIN 497 Internship

Work experience directly related to the student's area of concentration. Guidelines are available from the Internship Director. Pass/Fail only. Prerequisite: third or fourth year standing; minimum cumulative g.p.a. of 3.00. Fall, Spring, Summer.
